February 14th is Valentine's Day. Although it's known worldwide as a special day filled with love and romanticism, the origins of Valentine's Day are a bit of a mystery.
Historians believe Valentine's Day may have originated from Christian and ancient Roman traditions, while some historians believe Valentine's Day may be related to a Roman pagan fertility festival. Other historians believe Valentine's Day began as a celebration of one or possibly more early Christian saints named Valentinus. According to one legend, Valentine's Day is named after Saint Valentine, a Catholic priest during the third century in Rome. Many believe Saint Valentine performed marriages for soldiers that were not allowed to marry. As a result, Saint Valentine was imprisoned for performing these marriages. While Saint Valentine was in jail, he wrote a letter to the jailer's daughter and signed it, "From your Valentine." Today this romantic phrase, "From your Valentine," is used on Valentine's Day cards, letters, and gifts.
Valentine's Day is celebrated in many countries. It is a day of giving flowers, cards, and gifts to show affection to loved ones. Children celebrate by giving their friends and family unique Valentine's Day cards. Couples celebrate by exchanging gifts, eating a special dinner, or taking a memorable trip together. Some people propose marriage or get married on Valentine's Day. Of course, Valentine's Day is not just a day for couples. It is also a day to celebrate self-love and friendship. But no matter how you celebrate, Valentine's Day is a time to celebrate everyone and everything you love.
