He leaves a tremendous legacy

Former President Jimmy Carter achieved a remarkable milestone in history as the oldest living US president. However, the Carter Center issued a declaration on Saturday, announcing that he will be receiving hospice care at his residence in Georgia.

“After a series of short hospital stays, former US President Jimmy Carter today decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention,” said a representative of the Carter Center.

Patients experiencing terminal illness may opt to receive hospice care rather than pursuing additional medical interventions. The focus of this care is not to provide continued treatment, but to supply comfort as the individual approaches the end of life.

That's why there have been dozens of messages of sincere sadness for the former president who is facing death the best he can.

He has been fighting cancer for the past few years

Jimmy Carter has been dealing with cancer since 2015. He was diagnosed with melanoma – a kind of skin cancer that had spread to his brain. Even with this tough diagnosis, Carter kept a cheerful outlook and was determined to battle the disease.

And he has been an incredible source of inspiration for many people. He faced his cancer diagnosis with courage and dedicated his time to raising awareness and funds for cancer research.

But, this time, he won't be fighting anymore. The Carter Center announced that Jimmy Carter decided to "spend his remaining time at home with his family."

He understands that his life is coming to an end – and he expects everybody accepts that he is passing away.

"I'm perfectly at ease with whatever comes," ex-president Carter said in 2015. "I've had an exciting, adventurous and gratifying existence."

Indeed, Jimmy Carter had quite a rewarding life

James Earl Carter Jr. was born on October 1, 1924, in Georgia, into a farming family. He was the oldest of four siblings and grew up in a loving community, where his parents taught him the core values of hard work and responsibility.

He later attended the U.S. Naval Academy, graduating in 1946. President Carter is one of only three Presidents to graduate from a U.S. military academy.

Furthermore, Jimmy Carter served in the Navy. But he chose to resign from his promising career in the Navy after his father's death in 1953. Then, Jimmy Carter returned to Georgia to assume responsibility for the family business.

While in the Navy, he married Rosalynn. Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter have been married for over 75 years now, and throughout his time in office, Carter displayed an unwavering dedication to his family. This didn’t change when he stepped down from the presidential role, as the couple continued to embark on joint humanitarian projects,

Jimmy Carter and politics

Carter joined the world of politics in 1962 as a senator for the state of Georgia. In 1970, he was elected Governor of Georgia and was a supporter of progressive policies such as education reform and racial integration. These formative experiences would prove especially beneficial when he took office as President of the United States in 1977.

He became the 39th president of the US, after defeating Gerald Ford… But, he had to face several problems as a president.

Jimmy Carter's domestic policy was marked by an oil crisis that led to a spike in inflation and unemployment – and he struggled to convince citizens to accept the necessary austerity measures.

During his administration, President Carter achieved major political success with the signing of the Camp David Accords in 1978, by which Egypt officially recognized the State of Israel. Furthermore, the President signed a treaty returning the Panama Canal to Panama.

During President Carter's term in office, environmental protection was given special attention, which led to the adoption of several important environmental regulations such as the Superfund program.

Life after his presidency

Jimmy Carter is an all-around active philanthropist who commits his time not only to the Carter Center but also to Habitat for Humanity and the Elders. He's a longtime supporter of Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit organization that provides affordable housing for those in need.

In addition, Jimmy is part of the Elders, an independent group of influential leaders, founded by Nelson Mandela, that focuses on creating peace, justice, and human rights.

Additionally, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter founded The Carter Center in 1982 with a mission to defend human rights, enhance democracy and improve global health. The Carters' work through the Carter Center was crucial in promoting peace in the world.

For all his tremendous efforts to achieve peace, He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
