David Jude Jolicoeur, or "Trugoy the Dove" as he was affectionately known, was a talented American rapper and an iconic member of the hip-hop group De La Soul.
David Jolicoeur might not be a name you recognize like some of the other big players in hip-hop, but his influence on the genre is unparalleled. His smooth vocals, sharp lyricism, and extraordinary sample selection all contributed to a sound that was completely revolutionary – and we are truly grateful for his contributions to the world of music.

Dave or "Trugoy the Dove" was a famous member of the legendary group De La Soul. Born in Brooklyn, New York on September 21, 1968, Jolicoeur started singing in high school with his friends Kelvin Mercer (Posdnuos) and Vincent Mason (Maseo). All three quickly prove to have a great talent for music and became rappers.
The three singers founded De La Soul in Long Island, New York in 1988 – and they would become one of the most revolutionary hip-hop bands in history.
Their debut album, "3 Feet High and Rising," released in 1989, presented a unique sound that was different from anything that had previously existed in rap. De La Soul displayed a relaxed, humorous, and upbeat perspective, which was completely different from the aggressive hip-hop style of the time.
That's why the style of De La Soul and Jolicoeur, marked a before and after in the 90s – and opened the door to new opportunities, especially, for newer bands.
Little is known about Jolicoeur’s private life. He was a rather private individual, preferring to keep his personal life away from the public eye. However, he's been characterized as being down-to-earth, humble, and devoted to writing music that speaks to the human condition. Additionally, he was a strong advocate for social justice causes and used his music as a way to draw attention to these issues.

David Jolicoeur excelled as an artist because of his ability to change flows and timing. He made a difference and helped De La Soul shape their unique sounds. He was known for his laid-back, jazzy flow and witty rhymes. It marked the group's fresh, eclectic sampling.
He was also a major element of De La Soul's musical style. His melodic voice added a contrasting element to Mercer's more dynamic performance, making an outstanding combination of sounds. As a result, they drew inspiration from funk, soul, jazz, rock, and even spoken-word records.
Actually, when the group dropped their first album, "3 Feet High and Rising," Jolicoeur was immediately recognized as a great artist and the song was an instant hit. It's now considered a hip-hop classic and people love it for its cool mix of samples.
But… Jolicoeur was not only contributing to their musical creations, but also delivering stellar live performances. He has earned a reputation as an entertaining and inspiring artist, often engaging with audiences and incorporating them into the musical experience.
David Jolicoeur did more than just work with De La Soul – he collaborated with Gorillaz and Tommy Guerrero too. And he was creating skillful and thought-provoking rhymes until his last days.

Even though De La Soul and Jolicoeur were a huge success and recognized for their music, they've had their struggles in the industry.
From copyright issues to their music not being able to be streamed or bought, they've had to face some obstacles. The group got into a lot of legal trouble because of some of their early sampling experiments, which has kept them from being available on streaming services for a long time.
But, they've still managed to be groundbreaking and make a lasting impact on hip-hop.
The loss of Jolicoeur marks the end of De La Soul
“Trugoy the Dove" participated in the last album "And the Anonymous Nobody" which became available in 2016 and was celebrated for its live instrumentation and collaboration with a variety of artists.
Just two weeks before his death he participated in the Grammy Awards but was unable to perform due to his physical health problems that already showed great danger to his health... finally he, unfortunately, passed away on February 13, 2023.
Jolicoeur was fighting a heart disease for the last few years. He was suffering from congestive heart failure, and it prevented him to keep his career as a singer.
But… In the end, little is known about the cause of his death.
In any case, Jolicoeur left an indelible mark on hip-hop, with his unique flow, inventive samples, and conscious lyrics. His influence has been huge, helping to create the sound of alternative hip-hop and inspiring lots of other artists.
Now, his creative sounds and lyrics will inspire musicians in the hip-hop game for years, and he will continue to shape the sound of hip-hop for decades.
